Yo, British Airways: Google This

To contact us Click HERE

Some marketing genius at British Airways thought it would be a grand idea to nose around online information about its best customers to compile useful personal information, including private photos, that could be used to "essentially [...] recreate the feeling of recognition you get in a favorite restaurant when you’re welcomed there," as one British Airways marketing genius explained in the Daily Mail newspaper in the UK.

Yo, British Airways: That is a stupid, annoying idea, and whoever came up with it deserves the boot. Facebook users are already increasingly wary of corporations nosing around in their private matters, of course -- and this idea is absolutely nothing like a "favorite restaurant" where you might be known and greeted by name.

Here's another take from the useful Big Brother Watch blog in the UK.

Main Event Update: On To Day 2!

To contact us Click HERE

I'm happy to say I survived Day 1 of the Main Event of the World Series Of Poker. While this is my first time playing the world's largest poker tournament, I wasn't nervous or anxious because I've been around the WSOP for several years and have played in several others with big fields here and around the country. As in any poker tournament, the key is to remember that the thousands of other players don't matter -- you only have to concentrate on the ones at your table. I did that.

My table wasn't all that tough. The only really good player I recognized was Dan O'Brien, a well-respected pro with over a million dollars in tournament earnings. He was fairly aggressive, and we didn't play any big pots. The other player I knew by reputation was Victoria Coren, a British writer and broadcaster who has hosted several poker TV shows in England and now emcees a BBC game show called Only Connect. She's a member of PokerStars Team UK, and sat directly on my right, which was a good thing, because she was the only player interested in any kind of conversation. Considering that we were at this table for upwards of 12 hours, it was nice to have someone to chat with and joke around with. In contrast, the Australia guy on my left barely said ten words all day. Sure, we're playing for big money, but there's no reason we can't enjoy ourselves along the way.

I'm always happy to have female poker players at the table, because there's such a dearth of them -- only 5% of the WSOP field. Towards the end of the day, after a couple of players had been eliminated from our table, we were joined by another woman, Sissy Murphy, who runs the Nevada Poker League and, like Victoria, was happy to talk.

I was very happy with my play throughout Day 1, in which I increased my stack from 30,000 chips at the start to 63,650 when play ended after 5 levels. There are plenty of players with much bigger stacks, but that doesn't mean much now. Far too often, those who get lots of chips early do so by being reckless and getting lucky, or constantly playing aggressively without changing gears. The pros with lots of chips know how to adjust, while the amateurs who've been hit by the deck think they'll keep running over everyone, but instead start bleeding chips away. The monster stack at our table yesterday at the dinner break kept the pedal to the metal through the evening, and was gone halfway through level 5. History shows that the early chip leaders only make it to the money (which isn't until the middle of Day 4) half the time.

I wasn't involved in any hands that make a great story, but I used a combination of good cards at times and good moves at other times to chip up, playing smart, patient poker. I felt particularly good about my reads of the other players, two of whom had tells so obvious it was like they played with their cards face up.

There are three starting days. Saturday (1A) had 1,066 entrants, while Sunday (1b) had 2,144 players. Today (1C) will be the biggest of all, with likely around 3,500, which would bring the field close to last year's total. Each day, about a third of the field is eliminated. My Day 2 isn't until tomorrow, so I'm spending today relaxing, writing, reading, going to dinner with friends, and not playing any poker or going anywhere near The Rio.

As always, you can follow me on Twitter for my updates from the Main Event, with the caveat that I'm not tweeting while I'm playing -- only on breaks.

One note: if you look at the results posted on the World Series Of Poker website, you may notice they have my hometown listed as Alexandria, Virginia. That's where we lived in the 80s and 90s, which is probably when I first got a Harrah's Total Rewards card, and it's been stuck in the system ever since. I just asked WSOP Media Director Nolan Dalla if he can fix that, and he's going to try, so hopefully it will list me as a St. Louisan from here on out.

Is Spanking Okay?

To contact us Click HERE
Here's an ABC News clip from the other day: "Parenting Techniques: To Spank or Not to Spank?"

I personally think it's okay. That said, I don't like spanking my kids all that much. I feel guilty, and that's because society has said it's not okay. It's to the point where I feel like Child Protective Services will be breathing down my neck. That's me though. Overall, I think it should be up to the parents. The recent viral video of the man beating his kid with a belt for not catching a baseball is child abuse. Parents who give their kids a good swift open-hand swat to the butt, after the kids have been behaving badly, are disciplining their children as they see fit.

Andy Murray's Gracious Speech Following Wimbledon Loss

To contact us Click HERE
I promised an update at my previous post: "Andy Murray Worn Down in Heatbreak Loss to Roger Federer at Wimbledon."

As noted, there was a rain delay during the third set. It takes almost an hour to close the stadium at Wimbledon so during that time ESPN anchor Mike Tirico introduced a news segment on Andy Murray's background, especially on the tragedy in his hometown of Dunblane, Scotland. In 1996 a shooter entered Dunblane Primary School and killed 16 young children and one teacher before turning a gun on himself. The kids were 5 and 6-year-olds. The Wikipedia entry for the shooting is here. The ESPN segment included news clips of emotionally distraught parents running down the street to the school. Dunblane's a small town of 8,000 or so residents. And the shooting was one of the worst in the history of Great Britain, so that background is a big part of the huge emotional support for Andy Murray.

The New York Times reports on Dunblane's support for Murray, "Scottish Town Rises And Falls With Andy Murray":

DUNBLANE, Scotland — Inside Dunblane Youth Centre, strangers hugged, fists were pumped and children cheered. Boys lay on chairs shaped like tennis balls. Girls with Scottish flags painted on their cheeks wove through the crowd chanting, “Let’s go, Andy!” The room was so crammed with people breathing stale, warm air that personal space seemed more an extravagance than a basic courtesy, but no one seemed to mind because up there, on the giant projection screen, was one of them.

The people of this village 30 miles northeast of Glasgow have congregated before, have packed its pubs and its social halls and its gathering spots, to watch their most famous son compete at Wimbledon. For three straight years, Andy Murray had reached the semifinals, and for three straight years, Murray had lost. They lauded his effort — “the Scots love a valiant loser,” said Gordon Sloan, of nearby Greenloaning — but yearned for glory.

“We’ve been teased a lot these past few years,” David Macaskill of Dundee said. “A lot of Scottish hearts broken.”

That chance for glory came Sunday, against the indomitable Roger Federer. An island that had produced a men’s Wimbledon finalist for the first time since 1938 wondered if Murray would actually win. A country prayed. A town hoped.

In the town center, two popular pubs, the Village Inn and the Dunblane Hotel, heaved with people 45 minutes before the 2 p.m. start. Crowds spilled onto Stirling Road, which was not a problem because few cars were out driving anyway. Those who could not spend their afternoon planted in front of a television still tracked the score. Outside the youth center, a coffee van blared the radio broadcast of the match. At Simply M&S, the supermarket next door, cashiers asked customers for updates.

Sitting at a table in the Dunblane Bowling Club, Doreen Rose tried convincing herself before the match that Murray could win, should win, would win. “He’s won 8 of 15 matches against Federer,” said Rose, of nearby Callendar. “But they’ve never played on grass. Oh, I don’t know. I’m so nervous, I can’t think.”

Murray captured the first two games of the first set (“Come on, Andy!”), then lost the next two (“Go get ’em, Andy!”). When Murray broke Federer to go ahead, 5-4, Malky McLachlan of Dunblane was standing against a wall. He was cradling his 16-month-old son, Magnus, who was sleeping through the commotion — and through what was Murray’s first set won in a Grand Slam final. “Maybe he’ll see more history when he wakes up,” McLachlan said.

Magnus woke up about a half-hour later, when Murray was toiling through an arduous second set. Federer broke Murray at 5-6, and Sheena Herley of Dunblane sensed a shift in the mood.

“It’s a wee bit subdued now,” Herley said.
More at the link.

Plus, some reactions to Murray's emotional speech. At Telegraph UK, "Wimbledon 2012: Tearful Andy Murray loses on court, but wins the nation’s heart," London's Daily Mail, "Murray lost to a master of the universe, the tennis equivalent of Pele or Ali - tearful Andy's hopes dashed as Federer wins 17th Slam," and the Guardian, "Andy Murray: the fans' tears."

And a critical reaction at USA Today, "ESPN dropped the ball on Murray's reaction." And the Chattanooga Times Free Press, "Roger Federer, Andy Murray both won."

Linking (Giving Credit) is a Critical Part of Web Culture

To contact us Click HERE
I love this piece at GigaOM, "Why links matter: Linking is the lifeblood of the web."

I'm probably an over-linker, but sometimes when I find a widely available YouTube I don't always give a hat tip. It depends on where I find the video. Bloggers like to link their friends and diss their enemies, so that explains a lot of it. (For blog posts, I mostly link to the blog where I find the reported information initially, and thus sometimes the person who broke the story might not get the link --- and again, the friends/enemies distinction might come into play here.)

I'm probably violating some of the correct norms, but then again, I think that's how most folks roll, actually. For the most part, I probably link to much. Folks have even complained about that to me in fact.

If it's not a hoax, what is it?

Dennis O'Connor and I are running a "Model Lesson" workshop tomorrow at the Midwest Educational Technology Conference in St. Charles, MO.

As part of the session, we're offering up four different challenges that demonstrate search and evaluation techniques. For this, we're using a spin-off of the RYT Hospital site: genochoice.com.

While students may not be able easily to detect the fictive nature of the site, the site is loaded with Red Flags.

What is not easily understood by seasoned investigators--and I expect most of the participants in tomorrow's session--is whether the site is a hoax or not. There is sufficient evidence to suggest it is not a hoax, contrary to numerous .edu sites that include genochoice on their hoax lists. The hoax theory starts to unravel the more you tug at it.

But if it isn't a hoax, what is it?

That's the challenge.

And it's a pretty good (i.e., deep) one. I'd like to hear readers' opinions on it. Why does this site exist?

By the way, the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus is another site that is likely in this shadowy category. Sure, it's bogus. But what is the purpose of the site?  Why would someone go to the trouble of keeping it fresh and perpetuating the fiction of a tree octopus? If you've never asked your students to figure that out, they've missed a real investigative challenge.

Google's Really Advanced Search

To contact us Click HERE
You've know doubt heard of Advanced Search. How about Really Advanced Search?

I spotted this at the bottom of a Google Search Results page today and had to take a look.

Among the search features, including the usual ones, are:
  • words almost, but not quite entirely unlike:
  • rhyming slang for:
  • this exact word or phrase, whose sum of unicode code points is a mersenne prime:
  • subtext or innuendo for:
and this:
  • the words , but not , unless they contain either the intersection of phrases , , and or a gerund in which case the disjunction of and will also be taken into account (on Tuesdays).
At the bottom of the page are also several links:

You can also... Tickle a unicorn Download our ranking code so you can run Google at home Search by odor Some of the features of really advanced search might make a good coding project. They might also be a challenge to explain. But they really make a better April Fools Joke.

Is it a Hoax or not?

Earlier this week, Dennis O'Connor and I offered a 'model lesson' at the ISTE Conference in San Diego. It was a full session, indicating interest in seeing how information fluency may be embedded in a session.

We probably attempted too much for a 60 minute session; we never did get to the fourth mini-lesson. In case you want to see our Lesson Plans for all four segments, you will find them here. Feel free to use them in your teaching.

The target for the lessons is Genochoice.com, a site that allows parents to create designer babies online. Fact checking claims and information on the site quickly turns up Red Flags. Most external references state that the site is a hoax, the claims are bogus.

I agree with bogus, but don't think it's really a hoax. The majority of information is made up. You can't "read" DNA using a thumb scan that is nothing more than a Flash movie embedded in a page. You can't determine if my medical insurance will cover the cost of genetic "improvements" based solely on my name. There's no evidence that you can "fix" genetic disorders. Someday that may be possible, but not yet.

What is a hoax? Most definitions boil down to "a deliberate deception." Some of the more malicious ones also attempt to defraud, which is not the case with Genochoice.  But while the information is deliberate, does it also aim to deceive?  I think it has a different purpose.

The profile of the author is the crux of the matter. It doesn't take long to determine that Virgil Wong is responsible for the content; he also owns the domain name. But is he a deceiver?

The inconsistency comes when you stop to consider why an artist-medical keynote speaker-PhD candidate-hospital webmaster would create a popular hoax site. Wouldn't that harm his reputation?

Bogus and Hoax sites present layers of challenges. Figuring out if they are bogus or a hoax is one layer. Deeper is: why does this site exist?

Tips from Google: What's Missing?

To contact us Click HERE
One of my colleague's recent bookmarks caught my eye:  How to solve impossible problems.
The link is to a story by John Tedesco of the San Antonio Times about Google search guru Daniel Russell who posed a daunting challenge to a room full of investigative journalists:

What’s the phone number of the office where this picture was snapped?

Here's the photo:
What makes this challenge difficult is that there is no direct information about the office from which the picture was snapped.
According to the article, "(Russell) wasn’t asking for a phone number for the skyscraper in the picture, which sounds hard enough. He wanted the phone number of the precise office where the photographer was standing when the picture was taken.  Nothing in that office was even in the photo. Yet in a few minutes, Russell, a research scientist at Google, revealed the answer by paying attention to small details and walking us through a series of smart Google searches."

Yes, most of us don't put Google's full power to use. Advanced features can make searching more surgical.  The article goes on to illustrate Boolean modifiers (what works and doesn't) as well as operators many people haven't tried lately, if ever. It's a good summary; take a look.
But Google is all about finding. Nothing about how good a result may be. This is typical of most students. We laugh when we hear "If it's on the Internet, it must be true," but that's how students actually behave. We're getting better at finding. We've made little progress at evaluating.
It's really not Google's business to tell us what to believe. And we resist attempts at interference when it comes to second-guessing what we want to see--although search engines are paying attention to what we click and are influenced by our choices.  Which is why it becomes all the more important that we develop good investigative habits.
Spoiler Alert
I managed to find an answer I'm pretty sure is right, but there is still some conjecture involved. If you'd like to solve Russell's challenge, go ahead. Answers are easy to find, thanks to Google.  Here's Russell's blog, and some answers.  Did I/they get it right?

TACA and Lufthansa plan to cooperate closely in future under a memorandum of understanding signed by representatives of the two airlines. Their objective, among others, is to begin codesharing on national and international routes. With an eye on future cooperation, TACA and Lufthansa are also testing other benefits for their customers such as pooling frequent flyer programmes, closely coordinating their flight schedules and mutual lounge access.

"TACA is immensely pleased at the prospect of cooperation with one of the world's leading carriers like Lufthansa," observed Alex Benítez, TACA Vice President for Planning. "With the signing of this memorandum of understanding, we are committed to doing our utmost towards meeting the requirements of our customers and ensuring that better day-to-day service awaits them in future." Daniel Ratti, TACA President for Peru, is confident "that we will be able to offer additional services and a range of new connections that will strengthen our position in commercial air traffic. TACA is showing that it is always in the vanguiard in the airline business."

Lufthansa lays on daily flights ex Germany to Caracas, Mexico, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile (SWISS) in a total of 35 weekly connections between its domestic hubs and Latin American markets. With just one stopover and short connecting times, passengers from Latin America can fly to destinations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Worldwide, Lufthansa serves 192 destinations in 78 countries.

From three hubs (in El Salvador, Costa Rica and Peru), TACA operates flights in an extensive network to 35 destinations in 20 countries across the American continent. For Marco Antonio Bologna, President of TAM, the partnership with Lufthansa is in line with the company's strategy to seek alliances with leading companies in destination markets. "We are going to explore possible synergies between the two companies' networks, and in doing so, we can offer new choices for flights in both Brazil and Germany."

"Both companies are distinguished as innovators and for their high levels of quality and credibility. Our customers will soon benefit from our cooperation," added Jens Bischof, Lufthansa's Vice President for the Americas.

cheap airline tickets on Tuesday midnight

To contact us Click HERE
As you know, airfare does depend on the airline, but it also depends on the dates that you're looking to travel on. Generally speaking, it's a bit cheaper to fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. And generally speaking, the airfares you find will be lower if you search for them on a Tuesday afternoon compared to a Monday. This is because airlines often introduce new fare sales on Tuesday mornings. I've actually gotten gypped a couple of times for not following this rule (I booked a flight on Monday, then saw that the airfare dropped the following day).
the best "hour" to buy tickets is on Wednesday at midnight (midnight at your airline's base city, not necessarily your midnight). airlines release holds on tickets every day at midnight
Apparently, this is the time when unbooked fares are heavily discounted for the public and made available for a quick sale.
The best thing to do is to buy your ticket early. The longer you wait, the more expensive the airfare will most likely be.Discount fares have advance purchase requirements (usually 14 or 21 days), so there is an advantage to buying before then.
Usually, your tickets are going to be cheaper if you buy them from the airlines site directly. They don't charge service fees, so it saves you a few dollars. But it's more of the fact that the airlines are easier to work with if you book with them, I've heard a lot of bad things about booking with sites like Expedia and Orbitz. It's always worth checking directly, you have plenty of airline choices. American, Continental, Delta, United, US Airways, AirTran, Midwest/Frontier, and Southwest are the options I can think of off the top of my head. Sites such as Expedia and Orbitz will also yield comparable or equal fares to what you would find at each airline's site.
